About Fr. Valles Carlos
Padmashree Fr. Carlos Valles (1925–2020) was a distinguished Jesuit priest, mathematician, author, and an inspiring figure known for his contributions to education, literature, and intercultural dialogue. Born in Spain, Fr. Valles moved to India in 1949 as a young Jesuit missionary, where he spent the majority of his life teaching mathematics at St. Xavier's College, Ahmedabad. His profound impact as an educator was matched by his passion for language, culture, and community engagement.
Fr. Valles mastered the Gujarati language, a rare achievement for a non-native speaker, and became one of its most beloved writers. He authored over 75 books in Gujarati, English, and Spanish, covering diverse themes such as mathematics, spirituality, culture, and self-development.
Apart from his literary contributions, Fr. Valles was a pioneer in bridging the East and West through his deep understanding and appreciation of Indian culture, philosophy, and traditions. He received numerous accolades for his work, including the prestigious Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak, the highest literary honor in Gujarati literature.
